Southaven, Mississippi

Southaven MS Real Estate, Southaven area and Community Information

Located in the northwestern corner of Mississippi, you will find the city of Southaven. With a population of nearly 50,000 people as of 2010, this is the third largest city in the state. Southaven is part of DeSoto County, and despite being located in Mississippi, it is also considered to be a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee.

History of Southaven

Southaven was founded in the late 1970s by a man named Kemmons Wilson. Wilson was a Memphis homebuilder who also founded Holiday Inn. The area began with a few residential neighborhoods featuring small homes just south of Whitehaven, Tennessee. This is why the community was dubbed Southaven.

Southaven grew rapidly, and in just its first 20 years, its population tripled. The community was incorporated as a city of Mississippi in April of 1980. It was this city that was the childhood home of novelist John Grisham and singer/songwriter Cory Branan. Today, there is a delightful variety of businesses, churches and homes in Southaven.
