History of Senatobia
In 1834, a man by the name of James Peters purchased some land in Northwestern Mississippi from the Chickasaw tribe for around $1.25 per acre. He named the area Senatobia after the Chickasaw word Senatohoba, which translates to rest for the weary. In its early years, Senatobia was little more than a rest stop for people traveling to Hot Springs, Arkansas.
After the railroad came through the town in 1856, Senatobia became a significant railroad station and began exploding with growth. The city was burned twice during the Civil War, but it was able to fully recover both times. By 1880, Senatobia was a thriving little town with more than 50 businesses and hundreds of residential homes.
